⓵. THE LONGEST KISS LASTED FOR MORE THAN 58 HOURS
Ekkachai Tiranarat and Laksana Tiranarat from Thailand locked lips for a whopping 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds in 2013 to clinch the Guinness World Record for longest kiss. They beat out nine couples at a Ripleys Believe It or Not! event in Pattaya, Thailand, to win cash, two diamond rings and the title, of course!
⓶. KISSING IS GOOD FOR YOUR TEETH
Can a kiss a day keep the dentist away? Not quite, but it is shown to help prevent tooth decay. That’s because locking lips and swishing tongues increases saliva flow. According to a study in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, the minerals in saliva clean out food particles in the mouth and protect tooth enamel. We still recommend brushing and flossing daily, but adding a few extra kisses to your routine couldn’t hurt.
⓷. KISSING TRANSFERS LOTS OF BUGS
A passionate kiss swaps a lot more than saliva. In fact, researchers found an intimate 10-second make-out session can transmit up to 80 million bacteria between partners. According to the study published in Microbiome, couples that kissed at least nine times a day also shared similar bacterial makeup on their tongues.
⓸. WOMEN PREFER KISSING MEN WITHOUT BEARDS
Men may seem to look sexier when they rock some scruff (cough, cough, Joe Manganiello), but according to William Cane, author of The Art of Kissing, 53% of women prefer kissing clean-shaven men. It’s not all bad news for men with beards, though. Cane also found that about 33% of women like kissing men with stubble every now and then.
⓹. GOODBYE KISSES HELP HUSBANDS LIVE LONGER
The easiest way to up your spouse’s life expectancy? Give him a peck before he goes to work. Dr. Arthur Szabo gathered two years’ worth of research that was reported in a West German magazine in the 1960s and concluded that men who kissed their wives before work live about five years longer, make 20 to 30% more money and are involved in fewer car crashes. It seems kissers go to work with a more positive attitude, making them physically and mentally healthier.
⓺.TWO-THIRDS PEOPLE TILT THEIR HEADS THE SAME WAY
Bumping noses when leaning in for a kiss can kill the mood. Chances are you’ll avoid the collision if you tilt your head to the right. Neuroscientist Onur Güntürkün people-watched for about two-and-a-half years. After observing more than 120 kisses, he determined that twice as many people turn their head to the right than to the left.
⓻. ANCIENT ROMANS SET THE GROUND FOR WEDDING KISSES
You may now kiss the bride. We’re pretty familiar with these exciting words, but why do we seal the deal with a kiss? It could be traced back to the ancient Romans, who would legally bind contracts with a public peck. According to The Roman Wedding: Ritual and Meaning in Antiquity, the same act could extend to the lawful binding of two people in marriage.
⓼. THE FIRST ON-SCREEN KISS WAS MORE THAN A CENTURY AGO
From Pretty Woman to Spider-Man, weve seen plenty of great smooches in our lifetime. But in 1896, Thomas Edison aired the first on-screen lip lock in history. The famed inventor of the phonograph and electric light bulb filmed and showed The Kiss, a 23-second film featuring Canadian actress May Irwin, in his New Jersey studio during a time when public kissing was taboo.
⓽. KISSING ISN’T UNIVERSAL
You’d think everyone would engage in the delightful act of smooching, but that’s not the case. Anthropologists found that about 10% percent of the world is missing out. In The Science of Kissing: What Our Lips Are Telling Us, author Sheril Kirshenbaum explains how some societies engage in other displays of affection, like licking or nibbling, instead of traditionally locking lips.
⓾. YOUR VIEW OF YOURSELF AFFECTS WHOM YOU KISS
The sexier you think you are, the pickier you are with whom you kiss. In a study of hundreds of men and women between the ages of 18 and 63, researchers found those who find themselves attractive place a greater importance on kissing.
